What should a digital strategy include?

A digital strategy connects business goals to the digital work that can support them. It helps a team decide which audiences to prioritize, what needs to change, which channels or products deserve investment and how progress will be assessed.

A strategy is useful when it helps people make choices. A document that lists every platform or trend without setting priorities is unlikely to guide the work.

Start with the business situation

Before recommending a website, app or campaign, understand the business goal and the conditions around it. What is changing? Where are customers getting stuck? Which services or products matter most? What is already working?

Review the current digital presence, available data, customer feedback, internal capacity and existing tools. This does not need to become a large research exercise. It needs to provide enough evidence to separate the real problem from the first solution someone suggested.

Choose the audience and the outcome

A strategy should name the people it needs to reach and the action or change the business wants from them. “Reach more people” is too broad to guide decisions. A clearer objective might be helping a particular audience understand an offer, request a consultation, complete a purchase or use a new digital service.

Audience research should shape the message and the experience. It can reveal which information people need, what concerns them and what might prevent them from taking the next step.

Make the choices visible

A practical digital strategy often covers:

  • Positioning and key messages: What should people understand about the business, and why is the offer relevant to them?
  • Customer journey: How do people discover the business, compare options, make a decision and receive support?
  • Digital channels and products: Which website, platform, app or marketing channels serve the objective?
  • Priorities and sequence: What should happen first, what can follow, and what should not be pursued now?
  • Resources and ownership: Who will deliver and maintain the work? What skills, budget and approvals are needed?
  • Measurement: What evidence will show whether the work is helping?

These parts should connect. If the goal is to generate qualified enquiries, for example, the site content, campaign message, enquiry form and follow-up process all affect the outcome.

Turn direction into a workable plan

The strategy should lead to decisions people can act on: a prioritized roadmap, an agreed scope, clear owners and measures. It should also record assumptions and open questions, so the team knows what needs validation before committing more time or budget.

WL Advisory is one example from our work where clear digital communication mattered. The firm’s services span investment climate and governance, project establishment, and territorial development. A website needs to explain those distinct areas in a way that helps different audiences find the information relevant to them. That is the kind of communication problem a strategy can help clarify before design and development.

When should a business revisit its digital strategy?

Review it when the business changes direction, introduces a new product or audience, invests in a major platform, or finds that current channels are not supporting its goals. It can also help when teams are active across several channels but lack shared priorities.

A useful digital strategy does not predict every change. It gives the team a reasoned direction and a way to adapt as it learns. CREASTATION brings strategy, design and development together so the plan can connect to the work that follows.
